only the outerbands of hurricanes have thunder and lightning. the inside bands and eyewall have strong winds and rain and also tornadoes.

there was some thunder in rita but thats the only one iv ever heard thunder in.

In October 2005, it was the strongest storm to ever form in the Atlantic Basin, it had a central pressure of 882 mbars.

I live on the North Carolina coast and work on a barrier island as a police officer. Once we announce the mandatory evacuation, it's up to the residents to get out. If the storm is Cat 3 or greater, we leave. So if you can't afford to get out, call before it's too late. Someone can probably get you to a shelter. Hope that answers your question.

In mandatory evacuation..if you prepare for the hit (water, batteries ...all the weather channel tips...) and then hide out and don't answer your door, hang low....can you stay or do they like check to make sure people aren't hunkered downin doors? How do they enforce it? Curfew? I'm presently as broke as I can be right now...I couldn't not gas up my car to evac if told to. Do tell?

and I agree that tornados make better youtube videos than hurricanes. No assesment about which one is badder than the other....love all the videos guys, thanks for posting and chatting up about it too.

Who's ignorant? A coastal city a with an average elevation 8' below msl? The army corps of engineers were charged with a feeble goal did as told. The levees were designed for Mississippi River managment in day to day status and not for a nearly 30' storm surge. We've been relieved to see levees help in storm situations in the past, but have always known this was beyond their purpose and that one day they would not sustain. But we waited til it was in our face to react, instead of prepare.
