My friend had that problem, I put a new fish in or change the set up. There's something that's off balance in your tank

  • If your fish are ...

If your fish are hiding that means they don't feel safe. To fix that problem you need to get more fish in your tank. Mbuna feel safer in large numbers. (Safety in numbers) Then they will come out more :) Because they feel more comfortable with more fish around them. They're thinking - because they aren't many fish around it mustn't be safe to go out. (just like they are in the wild Lake Malawi)

  • Depends. In tall ...

Depends. In tall tanks the same amount of substrate will be thicker then it would in long tanks. Anyway general rule of thumb is 1 pound per gallon. However with sand being so fine and compact, you may want a little more. Especially with African Malawi since they will dig like its no ones business. With Malawi about 2" to 3" of sand is perfect. For a 40gal long tank you want around 40 to 50 pounds of sand, OR 30 to 40 pounds of aragonite/crushed coral. Lots of people buy pool filter sand.
