exactly what frequency it is you want louder (in this case the low bass freq.) if it is too strong, it makes the desired part louder on the expense of the other frequencies (listen well, when the bass hits, it's as if somebody is decreasing the volume of the other sounds, as if a kid is playing around with main volume). In this song Benny has the compressor on Bass turned on from the beginning, in the song satisfaction, bass starts without a compressor, after a few seconds, it's turned on.

Contemporary House, Trance, Goa and almost all dance music use pretty similar signature sounds from a few high tech synths, one is the Swedish Clavia's Nordlead synths, the other is the German Access's Virus A, B, C, Ti synths. Some also use Roland's JP8000, JP8080... You don't exactly need a virus for that bass sound, but it sounds pretty similar to some Virus presets.
