Correction: The modern yellowstone wolves are canadian in origin (c.l. occidentalis). The original YNP wolves were smaller, nimbler animals (c.l. nubilus). Genetic testing on modern YNP wolves and remains from the original population show no similarities. That's one of the cited reasons why the number of elk calves is decreasing: The modern Yellowstone wolves are adapted to chasing caribou in Canada, which are much faster runners than Yellowstone elk.

do you have any problem with that?
what does vasilije mean?
there were wolves in the park. since the beginning of the 20th century humans have been killing them by the millions, not just in yellowstone, but everywhere in the world. Most of this action were done with the excuse of raising the elk population for hunters, or because people think they are cold predators. wolves are docile and naturally afraid of people, and they should... we have done nothing but wipe them out in the coldest way possible, without thinkin of the consequences of these actions

By XvasilijeX [Affiliate User] 1221254200 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveREintroduction of the wolves, at least to me, indicates that there were originally wolves in Yellowstone (which there were). Thus, why should this create controversy over the slowly lowering number of Elk calves? They survived before, they can do it again. If there really was an issue to their numbers, as was implied at least to me by Nat.Geo here, then human hunters - not the wolves or bears - should be limited in their activities. Opinions?
