Following the Moldavian and doppelganger shenanigans in 1985, "Dynasty" improved creatively in the spring of 1986.

Albeit, in the fall of the same year, once #1 prime time soap, "Dynasty" sank to new creative and ratings lows as it launched a hideous 7th season.

This comparative look at the 1986 remake of a 1981 scene from the pilot, with Emma Samms replacing Pamela Sue Martin, illustrates well what kind of a mess "Dynasty" morphed into by late 1986.

Aside from the wrong accent and hair, the remade scene shows Fallon as more vulnerable and out of control. The cheesy flashback music and the overall execution don't help.

The chauffeur character, who was dropped at the end of season 1, returned as a self-made millionaire to, what else, carry out revenge against his former boss, Fallon's father Blake.

As many other storylines on "Dynasty," the twist went nowhere, as the chauffeur set his sights on Blake's other daughter Amanda, who was also recast, but failed to click with the audience.

The remake is taken from the 7th season premiere episode "The Victory" (aired September 24, 1986), directed by Don Medford.

The original scene is taken from the "Dynasty" pilot (aired January 12, 1981), directed by Ralph Senensky.

PMS was a tompboy, ES was a damzel in distress. It was not a re-cast, it was a change in character. The remade of this scene only makes it more obvious....

Honestly, I can't even believe that Samm's Fallon would ever sleep with the chaueffer Michael... just wrong then, wrong now. Even though season 9 was better -- but only marginally because Samms was still incorrect for the part (even age-wise Fallon is supposed to be older than Sammy Jo for instance; but Samms looked younger...)

i love samms but never understood why she replaces psm. dynasty jumped th ehsark when they replaced the original fallon and later the original steven. how could they let them get away? samms was great as holly on gh but psm was sorely missed when she abandonned her dynasty. and that flying saucer idea was ridiculous!

  • PSM is was and ...

PSM is was and always will be Fallon to me. She was sexy, bitchy, fantastic. It didn't help for me that Emma looked nothing like PSM. Pamela was tall and flat chested, Emma was short with huge knockers. And every time I see the painting of Fallon with Emma...I laugh.
I have nothing against Emma Samms, I loved her on General Hospital and Models Inc., but she was just not right for Fallon. I will say however, she looks more like she could be Joan Collins daughter than PSM.

    Continued from below...

Emma being an upper-class English lady in real-life brought some much needed class to Fallon, which distinguished her from trailor-trash tramps, like Sammy Jo. Samms was fantastic in Season 9 and it's such a shame it took producers so long to allow her to flourish in the part.

  • Well, I like both, ...

Well, I like both, Martin has the edge on Samms. PSM had better scripts and was the original conception of the character. Season 1 was Martin's best season. However,in her remaining seasons Martin was sidelined by Collins as Alexis (Fallon went from queen bitch to mother's brat). By Season 4 Martin's Fallon had become similar to the dull teary-eyed victim Samms inherited.

  • Yes, the writers ...

Yes, the writers had lobotomized the good old feisty, free-spirited, and independent Fallon, turning her into a victim (were those 1980s viewers afraid of strong women or were the writers totally incompetent?) while PSM was still on the show (seasons 3 and especially 4). But I do have to agree, despite her excellent performance in season 9, Emma Samms could never match the greatness of PSM's Fallon.
