The Error Loading Operating System message has returned. I proceeded with the fixmbr and fixboot with the Windows Recovery Cd to repair. These two items worked, to a point. Windows XP would load, I would select a user, and it looked like everything was fixed, BUT with less than a minute being up I get the BSOD -- Blue Screen of Death.

What can I do? While Windows boots up and before the BSOD comes up I get no reaction from the computer when I click any of the desktop icons, when I place the mouse over START it immediately goes to an hourglass figure, so I don't know how to proceed from here since I can't get to Control Panel to get to a system restore.

Please help!

When I turned off the computer and turned the power back on, it would give me the Error loading operating system message again. When I repeated the fixmbr and fixboot steps and it went to BSOD, I let it count the dumping physical memory. It stops at 73 or 74 and then attempts to reboot on its own and gets the error loading operating system.

I also tried copying the NTLDR and NTDETECT files earlier in the day, although that did not seem to work.
The BSOD message read as follows:

a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. if this screen appears again, follow these stepsL
check to be sure you have adequate disk space. if a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.
check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disables BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advancedstartup options, and then select safe mode.

  • Usually you will ...

Usually you will get the BSOD for three reasons. One is if you don't have enough memory and it bogs down you can get it. The other reason is just like the BSOD says, if you install hardware which is not compatible with the system it will bug out. The 3rd reason is corrupted files and or corrupted registry.

Seeing how slow your machine was at booting up and loading programs, I am willing to think maybe you don't have enough memory? Well get back to me on what you find.

    Peace :)

  • Problem solved. ...

Problem solved. Here's how: I could only operate in safe mode After testing the memory with memtest and finding no errors, performing a diagnostics of the hard drive and finding no errors, I ran vundofix followed by Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. This last program fixed my issues to where I am back up and running on the computer.

My next step was going to be using the reinstallation CD to get it running again. I was concerned with programs that I didn't have the CDs for.

    Hope this helps.
