El Salvador's citizens have been hit by the global slump in the main part because their currency is also the US dollar and the economy relies heavily on remmitances from overseas workers.

Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo travelled from San Salvador to the town of Intipuca, to find out what effect this is having on El Salvador's population.

  • All in the name of ...

All in the name of "fighting communism."

More like fighting for American corporations' freedom to exploit people and resources.

Unfortunately, I remember when the US made damned sure this would be the outcome: a rightwing toady with a counry totally economically dependent on the United States.

is this a joke, they made a statue to honor those who left their country? you'd think a country with any level of self respect would make a statue to honor those coming back, or at least, sending the money back. The fact that they made a statue of someone backpacking away from the country speaks tons for the type of people living there.

Its not about who we will disciple just the threat is there. Sort of like when they put street lights in cities and crime when down.

  • I would agree ...

I would agree Americas dominance was waning if every one else was not suffering from this crisis as much or worse than we are. So relativity we are still the mono polar world power. I would like to read these commentators that say we are in a multi polar world. Who are these multi polar players? A multi polar world if far more dangers than a mono polar one.

Iraq at this point is going in our favor. The support in Iraq thing was brought on more by public opinion than military necessity.

I S**k at math too, don't sweat it. You're entitled to your opinions man, all me and the other people here are saying is America is not faultless, no one is. It's late in my hemisphere, so I'm going to sleep. Peace dude, don't believe the hype!

  • Coincidentally from ...

Coincidentally from the end of World War II till 1991, there were two super powers my friend, the Soviet Union and the United States. I don't think I'm blaming America for all the world's ill's, America contributes a great deal of positive things to the world, but don't be blinded to the fact that it's historical fact that has caused a lot of suffering too. Going back to Latin America like the video here, America has caused a lot of suffering in El Salvador, Honduras, Chile, Panama and Cuba.

  • I don't really ...

I don't really think America needs to be a 'big stick', I mean who exactly are you planning on disciplining? Iran or Venezuela? They are about as threatening to the rest of the world as cotton wool.

  • I'm kind of lost ...

I'm kind of lost here, how exactly do I benefit from American military dominance? In fact American dominance is waning and most commentators would argue that we live in a multi polar world now which requires multi lateral solutions to problems. It was not long ago that America was desperately asking for support for their mission in Iraq from the Europeans they scorned in the UN.

  • How large are the ...

How large are the armies of Europe and Australia and New Zealand? Think about it in comparison to 100 years ago. Why is that? Maybe because they all depend on America to be around with the big stick. Also a tax on America the world free rides on. So maybe you should pay for those 31 million Americans health care in the grand scheme of things.

  • My bad on the math ...

My bad on the math forgot to move that decimal over. Im not happy with the health car system but it has a huge positive side. Where are most all major Pharmaceutical companies located? Where do most new medical discoveries come form? That right the American system. A tax on those 10% of Americans the rest of the world benefits from.
