    Yeah they are in A major, but in this context it forms A dorian, not A major, as he started on C, which is a minor third above the root. A major works as well of course - that's the beauty of the blues!

    I'm sure other people noticed, but those "half steps" he used are simply two notes from the A Major scale. IMHO, everyone should try and blend the pentatonic and scales shapes together in their solos. It is the only way to get the true blues sound we all love.
