    Ah, I remember chasing threads on a lathe.
    I always got nervous as the bit approached a shoulder. Had to disengage that spitnut lever quick then make sure you engaged it on the right number on the dial.

  • I usually do it ...

    I usually do it backwards if the part is small enough. Set it up to turn backwards, cut from behind, and that way the toolpost moves out from the shoulder instead of towards it and you dont have to worry about shutting the machine off in time. You can also engage the leadscrew with the machine off and make sure it's in the right notch before turning it on. You can also get closer to the shoulder safely. Try it sometime!
