Grand Funk Railroad performing Inside Looking Out live from 1969. This clip was shot at "The Show" WITF-TV in Hershey,Pa. November 1969. Mark & Don were 20 & Mel 18 years old. This clip is timeless. I've had hundreds of messages from people of 4 generations worldwide that just are in awe of this powerful performance (Folks from 11 to 83 years of age). I've been told it's early "metal", to the original "grunge", to the real begining of "punk, to the first "garage band", to "pure tribal rock", to "straight-in-your-face rock", to "industrial-strength power rock". One things for sure, it is powerful, passionate, singular, & unique. Mark, Don, & Mel changed music forever with 10 minute Power Songs like this one. This is a POWER TRIO at its best. Grand Funk Railroad was truly a "Performance Vehicle". What you heard on the albums could be duplicated 100% on their live performances. Many would say it's impossible for a 3 piece band to do this live. See the impossible. Once you start watching it, it's hard not to finish it. This is the most popular GFRxR video on the net. Im sitting here lonely like a broken man.
I serve my time doin the best I can.
Walls and bars they surround me.
But, I dont want no sympathy.
No baby, no baby,
All I need is some tender lovin.
To keep me sane in this burning oven.
And, when my time is up, youll be my reefer.
Life gets worse on gods green earth.
Be my reefer, got to keep smokin that thing.
No, no, no, no, no, no.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
I said now baby ... baby ..., let me smoke it ... smoke it ...
Makes me feel good ... feel good, yes, I feel good ... ahhhhh ...
Yes, I feel alright ... feel alright ..., yes, I feel alright ... feel alright ...
Yes, I feel alright ... ahhhhh ...
Ohhhhh ...
Ice cold water is runnin through my veins.
They try and drag me back to work again.
Pain and blisters on my mind and hands.
I work all day making up NICKEL (burlap) bags.
The oats theyre feeding me are driving me wild.
I feel unhappy like a new born child.
Now, when my time is up, you wait and see.
These walls and bars wont keep that stuff from me.
No, no, baby,
Wont keep that stuff from me.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
I need you right now mama.
I need you right now baby.
Right by my side, honey.
All night long.
Make me feel alright ...
Yes, all ..., yes, all ..., yes, all ... alright.
You better come on up and get down with me.
Ill make you feel real good, just you wait and see.
Make me feel alright ..., yes, I feel alright ...
Yes, all ..., yes, all ..., yes, alright.
I signed the petitions and a great musicians band.

Donnie Brewer is always mentioned as one of the best drummers in the world. The way Mel played that Fender Jazz Master Bass with a pick as if it was a Strat is revolutionary. All 3 of these guys were at the top of game. They should have been in R&RHOF since '94. Everyone sign our petition in video's desc ription.
By PackedFunk [Affiliate User] 1206114050 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThese guys were just so underrated.. in the 70's I thought Mark was the most talented because I love guitar and learned to play because of him but looking back at it now Mel and Donnie were much more talented.

It takes only seconds to sign it. Come on all you Funk Brothers & Sisters. We need your signature & comments!
By PackedFunk [Affiliate User] 1205864665 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveMark's playing then, as it is now, is right on the money, no wasted "noodling" and all of the other "guitar hero" BS. That is the mark of a true musician, the song comes FIRST and FOREMOST. And as to specifics of his playing..Jesus H.Christ..I wish I could play 1/8 of what he is putting out in all of these performances, past and present!

By Ocujogurt [Affiliate User] 1205758659 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removemy dad was a drummer in a local band in the 70s (in SINGAPORE)....This song is his band's favourite number besides Joy to The World by Three Dog Night....he used to tell me that his guitarist (who is my dad's cousin) always dragged the solo and he couldnt stop cos he's sooo stoned!!!! LOL!!!....
By Psychedelicircus [Affiliate User] 1205733079 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removenever have seen the video, but this is the best song they ever did...in my opinion
By RKR1919 [Affiliate User] 1205732664 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removehahahah....yeah!!! this is our music!!!
By Psychedelicircus [Affiliate User] 1205732540 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHere in SINGAPORE, we love them!....i mean our mom and dad loved them(besides the beatles and the who)....when I was 13, back in late 80s my dad told me stories sbout this American legend called Grand Funk....he introduced me to this song and planted it in my soul....it rocked me till this day....
By Psychedelicircus [Affiliate User] 1205732469 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemovePackedFunk is correct. The critics panned this band from day one. They obviously didn't go to any of their shows and their studio albums could never match the power of their concerts. The first four albums rocked but GFR went downhill after they added the keyboard and tried to go pop. I've seen them over ten times and they always sold out Texas and Arizona and always left us screaming for more. This is the first that I heard that they were Not in the Hall. What a Sham! They ARE American rock !
By AndoOnX [Affiliate User] 1205704875 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveMark Farner and his Messenger Guitar!Fantastic!!!
This was one of the first songs I ever played in a band way back in the early seventies.
Is this a cover of an Animals song?. Just checking because this is great in its almost lost (only in hard rock) feeling. Baquic.
By ohchino [Affiliate User] 1205686181 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThese 3 guys were the "Bad Boys" of Rock at the time, much like Guns & Roses was 20 years later. I have a Rocky Mountain News newspaper clipping from Denver '72 when GFRxR played there saying that Mark Farner was throwing "lids" of weed to the overpacked Collisium croud. No doubt about it, they were cocky back then, but if you can back it up - it ain't bragging! They were & will always be The People's Band, The American Band! The establishment hated this band.
By PackedFunk [Affiliate User] 1205662445 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis is orgasmic.
By sreed333 [Affiliate User] 1205624364 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removetotally agreed those shity bands have no musical talent
By maniacablator [Affiliate User] 1205620906 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveMy Chemical Romance??? Fall out Boy??? does anyone even honestly listen to that Bull Sh*T????
I'm a real rock n roller.
My top bands are Grand Funk Railroad, Soul Asylum and Def Leppard!
When this came out you could spend years in jail as a felon for possesion of a joint. Read between the lyrics. This song is about freedom. Pssst! Me too!
