I'm from the UK, in my late teens I did as most teens do, once got so drunk ended up in a shop doorway. Cut to the chase next thing I was in a police cell charged with an attempted break in/robbery of a Post Office. I get really bad hangovers, physically they are very bad to me. I confessed and signed to get home and to bed. When the case went in front of a court I told the Judge as it was, the case was thrown out of court, so yes there are times when people admit to things they have not done.
