Without wishing to offend the maestro (LC )I have to say that the best version of this is unquestionably KD Lang. Check out the Juno awards 2005 in winnebago ( I think ) Just superb.

  • thanks for sharing ...

    thanks for sharing Cale version

It is Kafkaesque that he included the Marble Arch verse as such whereas for Cohen it was still in his head BUT he included it in the props, ie the Marble Arch behind him with the nasty feminist nasties singing his doom

Cale is the only ver I have heard that KEEPS to Cohen's theme of the whole disaster [ie Buttercup in Bath usurps Beethoven/Schiller Ode to Joy Holy Hallelujah for femmo Flag Waving on Marble Arch]

  • agreed, it is a ...

agreed, it is a great song. but... cale didn't add that lyric or change that lyric. that is how cohen wrote it
    "Maybe there's a God above
And all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
It's not a cry you can hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
it's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah" are all cohen's words. i think he has many versions of the lyrics. finally - imop - I don't interpret cale's version as dower but reverent.

  • Not going anywhere. ...

Not going anywhere. Cale used the words to create a dour version, it's a cold and broken Hallelujah. From what I think is the 1st performance in 1984, by the songwriter, and from what I know, and what I've read, Hallelujah is used in good times, and bad. Cale's version is only despair, and dour. that's all I'm saying. There's much out there from Cohen about the song, and how it has morphed.
    I just like the song, Allison Crowe's video is wonderful.Enjoy...or don't. It just a song. : )

Love K.D. Langs version....but THIS version has the BEST lyrics...and sometimes it is not the singing that moves you, but the words!! Just as beauty is in the eyes of the beholder....sometimes glory is heard through different ears!!

  • hey smood, i agree ...

hey smood, i agree he isn't the greatest singer, but i wouldn't use the superlatives you do. don't you think that voices suit certain songs? for example, cohen sings "First We Take Manhattan" and i think his voice is brilliant. i do prefer other versions of this song but he is definitely not the worst singer ever :) cheers.

It's a shame that Buckley left the best verse out of his version. Each of the versions are great in their own unique way.
