Thats what you're ...
Thats what you're supposed to do. Every real ballers knows that. Especially if the ball handler is fast, get back a little. If you're close, they'll cross you and take off. You're a good player for realizing how to play defense though. The two above you can't play.

I always play ...
I always play further away if they're quicker. Just about everyone I play against is quicker than me, so I give them space to make sure that if they try to drive on me I have time to get in front of them and cut off their drive.

If I'm too close, they beat me with their first step and it's all over. Of course, the downside of playing further away is that you give them the option of a jumpshot, but that's a risk you have to take.
