South Rampart Street Parade - Chris Barber and his Band 1982

This tune was first recorded by Bob Crosby. Bob Crosby led one of the hottest big bands of the 1930s, a unit that although filled with swing stylists could play Dixieland with the joy and spontaneity of a small group.

One of the hottest groups these days is Britain's Chris Barber Band. Chris started his band in the early fifties and even today, some fifty years later the band is still on top of the scene. I just checked his gig list for September and October 2007. Some 35 concerts over a period of 2 months. Who can claim that in the jazz world. Just unbelievable.

In 1982 the band consisted of Chris Barber trombone, Pat Halcox trumpet, Ian Wheeler clarinet/alto, John Crocker clarinet/alto/tenor, Johnny McCallum banjo/guitar, Roger Hill guitar, Vic Pitt bass and Norman Emberson drums

  • This was my ...

This was my favourite Chris Barber line up, even though I had a softer spot for John Slaughter , guitar wise. Roger Hill was, however, the better singer, but how come he never found the time to replace that missing front tooth ? Could it have been to help pull in the groupies ?

Another cool one! I saw these guys live and met them. They signed a dvd I bought of their tour in 2002 and they signed the inlay. By then the band was called The Big Chris Barber Band of course. Cool!
