he is mean as he came New Zealand and came to our karate dojo yesterday and tought us there were like 50 people there and the day before i was there and only like 15 people were there

This guy really is great.

Maybe thats the hardest challenge: do it so well that looks easy. Katas like nojuhachi ho and tekki shodan are realy minimalist but so hard to do perfect that you'll have to do them one million times to become a real karateca.

ps: sorry I don't know how to say karateca in english...

And i'd just like to say to everyone, i've been acting really obnoxious and childish, so i'm very sorry, will you please forgive me?

I've changed my mind now anyway, and have decided to do it next year in March, that way i will have been doing karate nearly 4 and a half years.

Kanazawa is so amazing, i respect him deeply.

Well, it depends not on the number of years, but on the number of hours. If you train 6 hours per week, it will take you 4-5 years to get your black belt; but, if you train 15-20 hours a week, then 2-3 years seem right.

HIs karate is so beautiful largely because his basic techniques are perfect. The man can do no wrong.

red & white belt (stripes going widthways not lenghthways) is sometimes used by the senior instructor, when there are numerous black belts in the dojo.

Not really a sign of rank, but simply so folks (especially kids) know which 'black belt' is actually in charge!

You dont see it often, depends on persoanl preference.

At our school, red belt is 8th kyu.And i'm not doing any of those things you said. Like, you're climbing a mountain, trying to find the way. You ask somebody what the way is, too busy trying to get to the top, when you haven't even appreciated the beatiful mountain and lake beside you, that kinda thing. I like to look at the mountain and appreciate the wonderful lake, rather than be so determined to find 'the way'. Karate takes time, i know that.

Please respect SKIF and its graduation system. There are no such think as red belts. And don't look at graduations and belts as a way to climb up the ladder, use karate and development of charater as your final goal, graduations will come naturally. Practice karate as karate, not as sport.

I think Kanazawa is truly great, but as for the Nijuhachibo kata itself, it does not seem too technically challenging, that's all I am saying.

After first kyu we have to wait at least 6 months to go for Shodan. Most people wait about 9 months to a year or more at our club, no longer than 2 years. Just saying this - I'm not American, i love and know alot about karate and Japan + the Japanese language AND i only pay £15 for a grading lol. I wasn't saying you were aiming that at me, because i know you weren't, but i'm just saying lol :D

It is really weird that someone can go for shodan test that soon. In our dojo students have to wait at least 1 year after ikkyu, so the total time comes basically to 5-6 years of hard training. However, I've seen a lot of Americans with brown and black belts, who know nothing in karate, but paid a lot of $ for gradings. If you attend seminars with prominent karate masters you'll never go wrong.

3 yrs to get ur shodan, were u fast tracked? lol it takes 5 or more years on average, it used to take 10yrs and the grading would b impossible, how come it only took 3? do you do freestyle karate? does ur dojo do a lot of competitions?

Thanks! I'm hoping to get my Shodan in September. I started training 3 years ago, so that seems about right. Omg I'm competing in this tournament soon, it's the first one i've ever done! Apart from this random club one like 2 years ago...Anyway i really hope i do go to Japan some day, it sounds really awsome.

Cool, you are so lucky, I wish I started training when I was your age. If you're still training 19 you'll be an awesome competitor. I got really lucky for a while and had a job that took me to Japan every year, so, I'd stay and train after work. It's really great, you'll go one day, and, you'll love it. Good luck on your sho-dan

Purple-5th kyu
Purple with a white stripe-4th kyu
Brown-3rd kyu
Brown with a white stripe-2nd kyu
Brown with two white stripes-1st kyu-my grade!
Black-1st dan.
And WOW you've trained with the JKA???And WOW you've been to Japan??? Lol i haven't seen much, i'm only 13 :P. What's it like in Japan? It's like, a totally different culture. I can speak a little Japanese, i'm learning it.
