I actually cried when I prepared to upload this song! Waylon passed on a few years back, and I guess I never properly mourned. Jessi Colter is beautiful.
Then, I suppose I'm nostalgic about this night...Willie was supposed to appear and duet with Waylon on a couple of numbers, as they always had. But Willie was nowhere to be found! After Waylon's set they brought out the "famed" cowboy vocal group Riders in the Sky - pissing off thousands of Waylon and Willie fans at around 1AM!

When Willie did appear finally (he later mentioned in his biography that "the computer guy" - Steve Wozniak - paid him "too much money"! The rock band Van Halen had received $1M so you can guess what Willie got) he treated us to what I consider a career performance. It was filmed but not released as part of this televised special; however you can find "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground" from this show on WIllie's CD-ROM from about 10 years ago.

Waylon was important to me early in life, as a guitarist, but even more so as a distinctive, soulful, vocalist. He was one of the Greats in country but also important in the larger context of popular music. Waylon still lives in all of us fans!

Your comments welcomed and encouraged!

Live, June 1983, near San Bernardino, California. This was the 4-day music festival organized by Apple Computer pioneer Steve Wozniak, aka, "Woz"!

Rare stuff -- hope you enjoy!

  • This was a strange ...

This was a strange show, because Willie was supposed to come out and sing the obligatory Waylon & Willie duets - but he never made it until about 2 hours later. There was a near riot when the concert brass ordered Riders In The Sky (a very dull decidedly non-Outlaw cowboy vocal group) to take the stage between Waylon's and Willie's sets!!!
When Willie finally did show, he put on the best performance I'd seen him do...worth the wait!
