We know more about space then we do our own ocean. Its probably safe to assume these 'prehistoric' species arent abundant, but it probably doesnt mean theyre on the endangered species list (nor would they be, freaking 1k feet underwater would crush even most of the reinforced deep sea explorer probes) They needed to keep this animal inside a pressurized tank to keep it alive.
