Merritt is playing the Ampeg Electric Upright bass developed around 1960, so this is from the sixties. Maybe the louder bass is affording Max the opportunity to really lay into those cymbals.

amazing brushes, anyone know if those are 16th notes or triplets when max plays all that stuff within the brush pattern??

I think you've got the line up a little confused. That is Stanley Cowell on piano for sure. Which means that the date would most likely be late 60's as Cowell played in Roaches band from 1967 to 1970. Yay for Max Roach!

I honestly think that the hair styles of the audience and the lettering in the background indicate to me that this might be around 1964 or maybe up to around 1966 or so. That's just my take.

Chales Tolliver was the trumpeter for Max Roach's quintet between '67 and '69, so this is somewhere in that neighborhood.

Since this is his quintet then it has to be between 1954 and 1956. Because Richie Powell the pianist and Clifford Brown the trumpeter were killed in 56. It also looks like Sonny Rollins on tenor who replaced Harold Land in 1955 it is either '55 or '56.

Really, does anyone know what year this was? I get the feeling from parts of the piano solo, and tenor solo, that this group was a little ahead of it's time..

Its strange that Roach chooses to move over the 'sticks' on the last 8 bars of the piano solo (rather than coincide with the start of the trumpet solo) !! ??
