You are correct, I'd thought the 88mm/105mms had been used earlier in the war, but looking it up a few moments after I posted my comment, I found it was a later development.

Still, this definatly isn't a new concept. During the final months of WWII, a 90mm recoilless rifle was in the works. It saw quite a fair amount of action in Vietnam. The Germans also used a 75mm weapon in WWII, and test guns were made in the 30s with bores as large as 305mm (you can guess why those never caught on).

Only in the later stages of WWII: the original big rounds for the Panzer III and the T-34 were 75mm, only later in the war upped to 76.5mm and 80/88. This is still at *least* equivalent to the tank-destroyer rounds of 1941, and probably (due to more modern round destructiveness) more deadly than the largest (88mm, 95mm) rounds of 1944-45. This thing could probably kill a big KV or Tiger tank. It may knock you on your ass, but it'll knock them back across the Rhine.

There were considerably larger rounds used by tanks in WWII, and for the most part, armor piercing rounds (the only thing I can really imagine this beast firing) don't need that much explosion to do their job.

Still, if Scarface had had one, maybe the movie would have ended very differently :P

EXACTLY! The real BFG! And boy I guarantee you don't want to be hit by a 76mm shell: that's essentially a World War Two heavy tank shell, the largest of the kind. Except it has modern explosives, which means it's even worse. Except this one can be used by Al Pacino: "Say hello to my leetl fren!"

so, basicly, when the round goes off, the shell flyw out of the back, osorbing most of the recoil, pretty smart, i want one!!!!!

This...is the gun of Rambo! put this bad ass on the shoulder of a Marine in a 4 man platoon and you give them a high kick ass weapon. Now all they need is an easier way to load.
