Persepolis is the poignant story of a young girl in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. It is through the eyes of precocious and outspoken nine year old Marjane that we see a people's hopes dashed as fundamentalists take power
- forcing the veil on women and imprisoning thousands. Clever and fearless, she outsmarts the "social guardians" and discovers punk, ABBA and Iron Maiden. Yet when her uncle is senselessly executed and as bombs fall around Tehran in the Iran/Iraq war, the daily fear that permeates life in Iran is palpable.
As she gets older, Marjane's boldness causes her parents to worry over her
continued safety. And so, at age fourteen, they make the difficult decision to send her to school in Austria. Vulnerable and alone in a strange land, she endures the typical ordeals of a teenager. In addition, Marjane has to combat being equated with the religious fundamentalism and extremism she fled her country to escape. Over time, she gains acceptance, and even experiences love, but after high school she finds herself alone and horribly homesick.
Though it means putting on the veil and living in a tyrannical society, Marjane decides to return to Iran to be close to her family. After a difficult period of adjustment, she enters art school and marries, all the while continuing to speak out against the hypocrisy she witnesses. At age 24, she realizes that while she is deeply Iranian, she cannot live in Iran. She then makes the heartbreaking decision to leave her homeland for France, optimistic about her future, shaped indelibly by her past.
I praise your wise stand on it. Unfortunately people like you are the least.
By germanicus24 [Affiliate User] 1208085076 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveCompletely agree. Im glad not everyone get lost in the hype of the nonsensic positive criticism to a movie which is incredibly disrespectful, racist and clacist.
By germanicus24 [Affiliate User] 1208084925 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe thing is, the topic of Iran, what really goes on there and such, is a hot political topic so I don't trust much that's said about it. It's similar to the Tibet thing in that there's a massively popular side over here which seems to have political support and an unpopular side, the one told me by my Chinese immigrant landlord. Both sides may be misguided by propaganda. While I don't plan on visiting Iran, I will keep my eyes, ears, and thoughts open on it. Peace,

Others with a narrower view, or anger , or some form of insecurity will look at it and call it something its not such as "anti-iranian" or "anti-muslim".
By PeoplesGeneral [Affiliate User] 1208076664 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWar with Iran is something that CNN and FOXNews likes to discuss. This movie and novel by Marjane shows how people in Iran are no different that the people of the West. It HUMANIZES the Iranian people.
By PeoplesGeneral [Affiliate User] 1208076258 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removejktcg,
If you bothered to watch the movie, they made a point that the West USED both Iraq and Iran and got you two to fight one another. All because they wanted to destablize both nations and get your country's Oil.
I'm surprised at the anger towards this movie. I took the movie as one person's experience, one person's point of view, which can never be considered the whole story. The animation was beautiful, Marjane was very funny, and the struggle of one woman to be true to herself in the face of a very difficult circumstance was moving.

By jktcg [Affiliate User] 1208013744 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI have seen things which are incredibly shocking when Satrapi claims to be an Iranian rather than a French. You have to be in Tehran's Behesht-e Zahra graveyard to comprehend the deepness of Iranian heroes and their epic efforts against the invasion of Saddam, which saddly Satrapi reduces to religious fanatism I dont know with what authority. To know about Iran I highly recommend Majid Majidi's movies which show the beauty and wisdom of Iran and life in general. Kind regards from Chile.

By Khono [Affiliate User] 1207932824 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis only talks about Iranians in the very intimate Marjane Satrapi-world. She wants you to think Iran is like this. This film is racist, classist, disrespects the heroes of the Iraq war to extremes reducting it to people who wanted 72 virgins in heaven. THIS IS ANTI IRANIAN, ask any Iranian, not one who lives in France and gets good rewards for showing evil pictures of Iran. My advice: DECIDE FOR YOURSELF, dont let a person with an agenda to tell you. This is not what you see in Iran.

By germanicus24 [Affiliate User] 1207857588 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveActually, it's not anti-Iranian by any means. o.O It focuses on the corrupt government and shows that Iranians are people, too. That religion and Iran's government should not mix; the government should not have the power to impose religion on its people.

its clearly showing the negative effects that the revolution and war had on this girl,
also the more ppl know about iran the less theyd want a war iran
Well it may be animated but the story is very real. Marjane Satrapi is a real person. It's just like How MAUS was in comic form but it was a true story about the halocaust. If you look at the inside of the book, She states the events as true and an autobigraphical memoir. If the book was fiction it would be labeled fiction.
By MrRadaikon [Affiliate User] 1207556840 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveOf course not. Satrapi is also fluent in French. She attended an Iranian private school that had full french Immerison and then she studied abroad in Europe. She originally wrote this book for her french audience which is why it follows such a Noir style.

123 - Get a brain my friend. Just saying many things in big words doesnt give them any credibility. Plus, its a warped perspective.
i heard iggy pop gives voice to a character named uncle anouche ... dats the reason i looked this up..
By NeoQuello [Affiliate User] 1207518775 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove123, you're an idiot. You think showing something about Iran is definitely not a good thing? The point of the movie is absolutely not politics; it shows what it's like for PEOPLE to be from Iran. It's very humanizing; it shows how they're regular people just like anyone else. The people are victimized by oppressive regimes, but I'd say it's a very pro-Iranian movie. We shouldn't dislike Iran because their government is bad, just as I don't like it when others judge Americans because of Bush.
By powerfunk1 [Affiliate User] 1207518436 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWell i believe all of you are more or less correct and I have read the first book as well. However, the reason why its so promoted, "academy award", so much comercial about its because they want to show something about Iran, definetly not a good thing. I mean i cant turn anywhere without seeing something about this film. Its much talk about war with Iran, this CAN sometimes promote that oponion to people that Iran is a bad country
