Olivia Newton-John - Don't Cry for Me Argentina 1980 PART 1

This is up there with the Elaine Paige and Karen Carpenter versions. (She was friends with Karen, by the way.)

Olivia is a bit before my time and I've never really listened to her sing, but she has a really beautiful voice, especially with this song.

It's a shame that many if not all songwriter/producers did not write any songs for this mega/vocalist that she is . SHAME on them!

Superior? I don't know. I have to give Madonna kudos for working hard at this song...if you listen to Olivia's and Madonna's - Madonna could not handle the high register the song was written in and it had to be lowered several octaves for her. ONJ's version was not modified to fit her voice. She performed it as it was written.

I've mentioned this in part 2 of the video, but in my opinion, Olivia has an awesome vocal range, she always seems to put her heart and soul into what she's singing, and sings with a passion you don't get in many of the hacks today. She also seems like she enjoys herself singing.

THat's what I loved about Wolfman Jack. He never underestimated what his audience wanted to hear. I remember when this first aired and I never even heard of Evita at the time.

The above statement pretty much sums up Olivia in my opinion.

ONJ's version was the first version of this song I ever heard and I fell in love with it immediately. Then, of course, Maddona came out with her superior version (let's not pretend it's not the best version); but, ONJ's version(as ONJ herself) will always be with me. x

I think that her accent added to the emotion of the song, but that's just my opinion.

Many an Argentine Definitely cry hearing this song in 1977-1983 because of the extremely cruel military junta that forced many to be exiled. 30.000 were killed and 100.000 "dissappeared", and countless were arrested. The songs definitely strikes a chord over the exiled Argentines and those still in the country.

A voice that unfortunately has gone unrecorded for a long time. An incredible vocalist.

It's a good cover of this song.. But the only fault that I have with the song is that Olivia can't get her accent under control. Other then that it's on part with Karen Carpenter and Madonna covers..
