Merle's true fans, like those here, are a solid, devoted group. To echo some of the comments already - Merle IS timeless and will endure. He's one of the Old Guard, who can't be replaced, only appreciated and loved. What a treat for the kids at this high school to be exposed to REAL country music from a man with no frills, just total honesty and talent.

Sadly, I didn't discover this song until I rewatched the movie Fargo just the other day. I forwarded to the end credits to see who was responsible for one of the best country tunes my ears have ever heard. Timeless, honest lyrics and that hypnotic walking bass line that resonates all day long!

There may be a few country music singer/songwriter/players as good as Haggard but nobody is better. Timeless songs and a fantastic backing band.

I've heard he can be a "piece of work" to get along with. Don't even know if that's true, but he's still so damn good, I have to admit it and say he's one of the most prolific song writers, has the most "tasty band", and sings his ass off, of anyone in country music. No matter what you think of Merl, he's here to stay, and might I add, we've played more covers by him than anyone in the world during my carreer as a steel player. Marc Trainor.
