Merle Haggard in "Roots Volume 1" pays his tribute to his idol Lefty Frizzell.
A windfall for Haggard came when he discovered that Norman Stevens, who played on Frizzell's hit "If You've Got the Money, I've Got the Time," had been living less that 12 miles form Haggard's Northern California home for the past 40 years. "I only found out about him because he recently started advertising swing guitar lessons," says Haggard. "I called him up, and he has been over here while we've been cutting Frizzell songs. We wanted to do 'If You've Got the Money, I've Got the Time,' but Norman is pushing 70 now, and he said, 'Man, I don't know if I can do that thing that way I used to.' We did the song 18 times, and finally got a take that's just amazing. I'll definitely be taking some lessons from him!"
