Candide Overture: Leonard Bernstein Conducting

dude....this along with westphalia/auto da fe, make our garden grow, and the closer were my marching band show..its was...challenging as hell but it was fun to play, even judges dont like to appreciate....some do, like the ones in state finals, those really liked it :]

I love this guy... he's so fun to watch and candide is beautiful

One of my favorite, i cannot understand who, with pieces like this around, some people refuse to like classical music. luckily there are those that do:)

We played this song for District Honor Band and it was my favorite. I love the clarinet part...

I meant, thats why I like orchestral music so much.

I know what you mean, I play the trombone in my school's marching and concert band. Anytime the low brass takes the melody, my band director tells us to play down some.I guess that's why orchestral music so much, because of the big(low) brass sounds like in the Planets Suite and 1812 Overture and any other late romantic/modern music.

I think he means like, a real Euphonium position. Most orchestras I've heard of just find a trombone or tuba player to pick up the Euphonium part, there's not enough need to have a Euphonium Specialist...Personally, I always found it funny that in Orchestras, people want trombones to sound like a trombone, but for some reason people hate for a trombone to sound like anything other than a baritone in band, where there are baritones actually THERE. *Rolls eyes.*

We played this at ECSOC in Guernsey in the Symphonic Wind Band and it rocked!

There are euphoniums/baritones in orchestras.... Planets Suite-Holts, Pictures at an Exhibition orchestration- Mussorgsky/Ravel, and many other pieces that I can't think of right now, off the of of my head.

Also, this was after his wife died of cancer, so that may also have something to do with it being less extreme. I think he learned a lot from his personal struggles in the relationship and her death.

This is Bernstein's own piece, so naturally he'd have a very particular idea of how it should sound. He was an amazing thinker/speaker, even if he wasn't the best physical conductor-- he just did whatever it took to get the music to sound the way he wanted it. That's pretty admirable!

Watch him conduct any of Gustav Mahler's symphonies. Then you will see him conduct in his most expressive style.

Wasn't Bernstein famous (or infamous, to some) for really extreme conducting? He seems to conduct really modestly here.
