This, the very best Modern Talking song in my opinion, is a message of hope and a quest for answers at the same time. This German duo, always derided or simply ignored by the critics, is a great romantic pop hits machine which millions of people have enjoyed.
On this particular song, I sense the strong influence of my favorite band The Police, not only in the world conscience but also in a guitar line which closely resembles that of "Every Breath You Take." (Another fine Modern Talking track, "One In A Million," may also be indebted to that Police classic - or maybe to the "Billie Jean" bass line.)
Blond Dieter Bohlen with his guitar and his smile from ear to ear, and Thomas Anders with his beautiful voice and his romanticism were a joy to see on tv or in the videos in my youth, and the songs were perfect for listening while driving at night in search of love.

1. a saint in Santiago de Compostela Cathedral
2. a human figure points to the Greek formula for attaining wisdom: "Know thyself." (postcard sent to me by my Prussian university teacher Nis A. Petersen)
3. ace French philosopher Michel de Montaigne
4. young dancers
5. communal wedding in India. The article points out that every day at least six women commit suicide in India because of pressure from their husbands or in-laws
6. writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn when he was a Gulag political prisoner (I learned of his passing away today, August 5th, 2008 - may he Rest In Peace)
7. a little girl brings a gift
8. the gift of poetry, beautifully eulogized by Yevgueni Yevtushenko in an article which is illustrated by Marisol Calés. It shows a member of one of the smallest ethnic groups in the world (only 500 persons), the Yukagirs in Siberia, who would show a poetic delicacy in the custom of kneeling to say sorry to animals before they had to slay them to get food
9. (left to right) actor Imanol Arias, singer Alejandro Sanz, Bob Geldof, Economy Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz, César Alierta, Peace Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus and Javier Nadal, fighting to end child labor in Latin America
10. Polish writer Stanislaw Lem, looking like a little boy. In "The Tall Castle" he movingly wrote: "When I was a child, no one would die."
11. Virgin and Child at Santiago Cathedral
12. Doctor Luis Montes believes in dignity in dying
13. amazing beauty, with or without ludicrously expensive jewellery
14. Spain has increased help to needy parts of the world more than any other country, but only five countries meet the United Nations requirement of donating 0.7 % of the gross national product. They are: Norway, Sweden, Luxembourg, Denmark and the Netherlands. Kudos.
15. 4 children (Action Aid photo)

* A curious fact is that Modern Talking's co-producer is a Spaniard named Luis Rodríguez. He also produced the deliciously catchy songs of Dieter Bohlen's protegee C. C. Catch.

* This video is dedicated to Germany, whose national soccer team and its followers elegantly accepted defeat before the Spanish team in the final game of the European Cup tournament, and to my fan from Noia Ovide.

  • after listening to ...

after listening to all the MT songs on youtube, I have to say this. Modern Talking has to be the single band in the world that has recycled their old songs as much as they have. It all sounds the same.
