Motorcycle USA got a chance to test ride the new 2009 Yamaha YZ125 and YZ250, the last of the Japanese 2-stroke motocross bikes. Check out the video and then read the full review at www.motorcycle-usa.com
Horsepower and top speed are good for selling bikes, not riding and repairing bikes. The 4 strokes may make more power but not a lot more. Four strokes have a wider powerband and make more power at lower RPM, which can be good, especially for novice riders. But 4 stroke motors are bigger, heavier and significantly more complex than 2 stroke motors, which also tends to make the bike bigger and heavier too. Four strokes are also much more difficult to maintain and repair than 2 strokes, and more expensive too. All things considered, a 2 stroke bike is a better choice for most riders, while a four stroke bike is better for dealerships and repair shops. Two stroke bikes are lighter, more compact and competitive with 4 stokes, and in my opinion, a lot more fun to ride. It'll be a sad day indeed when the last two stroke rolls off the production line. Fortunately these two are still available and more so that Yamaha is the company making them. Simple in design, quality built, durable and readily available relatively inexpensive parts and accessories. Damn the tree huggers, long live the two strokes!

By AlexOvie8jr [Affiliate User] 1226876693 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removewow! this video makes me miss my '98 YZ125! I wanna go out and buy one right now. Damn four strokes! only pros need that power. and the maintenance?! Sheesh! talk about blowing a motor if you're not on top of reshimming your valves every 15 hours. I miss the simple days of pre-mix and when "lite" only referred to beer!

By cheeseball247 [Affiliate User] 1226789353 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI think you are thinking of four strokes.
2 strokes "seem" louder, but they are not. It's the higher pitch that some don't like, but 4 strokes are MUCH louder. The sound wave is such that it also carries much further. Trust me, head to a track and let a few 2 strokes pass by WOT, then have ONE four stroke do it. I guarantee you that you won't be able to carry on a conversation with the 4 stroke going by.
why do they have to be so loud and obnoxious??
By cheeseball247 [Affiliate User] 1226778116 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeit's just that the stupid tree huggers don't like how they smoke.

By KAsoccer27 [Affiliate User] 1226532110 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThey invented the two stroke to have more power with less moving parts than a 4 stroke. And now they bring the 4 stroke back. Whats next bring back steam engines. long live the 2 stroke!!!
