2) This is a tutorial on how to pair the edges of the 4x4 to eventually convert the 4x4 into what resembles a mixed up 3x3. We will have to know how to position edges opposite from one another and with switched orientations (colors on the same face). The algorithm we will use for this step is:

(Dd) R F' U R' F (Dd)'

*NOTE* In my video, I was a little ambiguous/unclear on how to position the last two pairs of edge pieces before performing the above algorithm. When I said we "need the same color on the same face".. I meant to say "both identical pairs of edges should have the same color on the same face as its complementary piece and be situated in the same layer as well".. I believe that the example in the cube cleared it up, but I just wanted to put it here too in case someone actually reads all this :-)

This algorithm will be used to fix the remaining 2 pairs of edges. You may not have to even use this algorithm depending on how you match the last pairs of edges.

IF YOU FIND THIS TUTORIAL HELPFUL PLEASE COMMENT. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF PEOPLE FOUND THE VIDEO HELPFUL.

  • Yes, on the 3rd ...

Yes, on the 3rd step (my 5x5 tutorial has 4 parts) you can find the algorithm I use to switch corners. If you do it in the same order I do, you will never come across the corner parity errors.

It seems that if you were clever, you could avoid the first parity error altogether when you match up the last few edges (I know it's possible because I don't always have that parity error).

You are really very, very patient in explaining things over and over again, and I really appreciate it - it is very badly needed for anyone who teaches how to do a rubix cube. Keep it up dude - another two thumbs up for you! =)

Sorry, I figured it out. Thanks for the tutorial though! The first time I tried I didn't pay attention to where the centers needed to be, soon I realized my mistake and finished it within the next few days, working on and off. I always try to make things complicated and your tutorial shows that I added a few steps that weren't necessary. Again, thanks!

  • Ok, the first time ...

Ok, the first time I did these first two steps, I did them on my own. I got to the fourth step in solving it like a 3x3 when I saw that I had a parity error and then I did the algorithm you gave in your video... wrong. So I have to start over. But I have a question, did you just randomly pick which ones tho pair next? Or did you use a pattern so that you come out with the parity situation. I decided to get all whites and yellows so that I would have four of the middle 4 colors left.

I like to do the white ones first because they are easier to find usually. But EVERY edge piece (all 24) needs to be matched.

  • Check out my videos ...

Check out my videos on my page. I have a few of me speedsolving the 3x3, 4x4, and 5x5. I am personally not that fast with the 3x3.. on average about 40 seconds. I am trying to get faster with the bigger cubes now: edge pairing, centers, etc. But yes, you need to be fast at the 3x3 to do the final solve of the big cubes.

So do you have to pair up EVERY side? Or do you just pair up the white pieces?

    nice vid really helpfull

this is just for people having trouble remembering the (Dd) R F' U R' F (Dd)'. If you do (Dd) R F' U F R' (Dd)' you will end up with 3 miss-matched pairs that when solved with not cause parity again

  • I was not saying ...

I was not saying that they could be in different layers and have the same orientation/colors... That is not possible, of course, they must be in the same layer to have the same colors. I said that we must arrange the two pieces so that one is on the inside up and one is inside down.
I just meant it to mean that we have to get different colors to be on the same side/face in order to match them up. But yeah, just getting them on different layers would automatically mean they're lined up

edge pairs will ALWAYS line up, its phisicly impossible to not line up, even if you take out the cubes! (stickers is another story)
