This video details the superior defenses that Bryant and other superstars have to go up against in the modern era of basketball. Unlike he 80's and 90's isolation brand of basketball, Kobe is the most doubled-teamed perimeter player in the history of the NBA.

Zone is effective because it plays the percentages. It forces dominant players out of the paint and into lower percentage shots. It also forces great players to distribute the ball to the perimeter - where their role players will become forced into volume three point shooting. Zone is the most effective method of defense and is used around the world at almost every level. Zone is used in college basketball (NCAA) by most teams, and college is considered to be the 'purest' form of basketball. Zone defense is also used by most international teams and it was effective in beating the more athletic USA in the 2006 International Fiba games.

If you don't take my word for it, why don't you take Bryant's. Here is an article from 2007 in which Bryant talks about modern zone defenses:

"The rules are completely different now, said Bryant, comparing his era to Jordan's. "I've always been able to shoot the ball, but the rules have changed since he played in terms of playing a zone defense. You have to be a jump shooter now because there's no way you can get to the basket -- particularly myself because they just stack guys up. I wish we had the rules they had back in the day where you could isolate guys and you could go to the basket anytime. But now you have to be able to shoot.

*Zone was legalized prior to the 2001-2002 season in order to contain Shaquille O'neal.

*I made this video with my personal archives of Kobe/Laker footage. I made this video in 2 days - I will make a more detailed version and comparisons to Jordan's era when I have more time.

  • You can pass first ...

You can pass first before you get double team. Why do you keep the ball until you get into a double or trible team trap, then try to shoot in that situation? It's not smart.

He should learn how to find opportunities without the ball. Not always get into the trap first, then try to pass the ball. It's easy to turn it over.

Of course I play basketball. You are not a pro player or coach, are you? Why not read the articles written by pro?

  • Are you sure Kobe ...

Are you sure Kobe always pass in right time? I remember he passed when he couldn't find a way to shoot. That's not easy to be good assists. He just passed out in a hurry many times. He should stop and see what to do before he drove to the basket. That's MJ would do. He always pass the ball first, then find the way to let his teammates pass the ball to him and lose the double team.

Kobe just got into trap without notice many times. MJ knew how to prevent himeself get into defense trap.

no you have not played a game of basketball stop watching and play more.
Id rather get hand checked than have three or four hands all in my face so I cant see the basket.

  • After NBA banned ...

After NBA banned hand checking, the avg. score higher, and the wing players like Kobe, Wade could socre higher, what does number tell you? NBA tried to release the stress for offense players, and makes games more fun.

It's much easier to throw a 3pt shot if defense players can't use hands or body to push offense players. Cause he must leaves some space between offense player to avoid fetting foul.

  • What statistics? ...

What statistics? Defensive efficiency? I don't know where to find those statistics back to 80's and 90's.

Joe Dumars once said there's no way to defense MJ under today's rule. Joe Dumars was the best player to defense MJ, and he is Pistons' for years.

  • back in the 80's ...

back in the 80's and 90's defenses could do better? ok maybe so...

    BUT...

the 2004 Detroit Pistons and the 2008 Boston Celtics had 2 of the BEST defenses ever played in the history of the NBA, according to statistics. just because they cant be as physical doesnt mean they're not as effective.

  • Jordan played where ...

Jordan played where players were allowed to be more physical and referees wouldn't call fouls for looking at a player funny. He also faced defenses when handchecking was still leagal. Its a lot harder to drive when you're facing such physical players.

  • "If you don't take ...

"If you don't take my word for it, take Kobe Bryant's"

Why don't we take someone else's word for it... maybe someone who played against defenses from both eras of basketball instead of just one.

A quote from 40 year old Michael Jordan might have been more appropriate, but I doubt he would have said anything like that considering he was dropping almost 20+ ppg as an old man in the league, on teams far worse than Kobe Bryant's Lakers (meaning more pressure from defenses)

  • If the defense ...

If the defense players only can leave their hands far away from the offense players. The it's not real defense.

Back to 90s and late 80s, great defense team could do much better than Celtics.

And they were much, much more physical.

In today's NBA, a defense player plays physical, he definitely will get a foul.

See those defense players raise their hands, and dared to touch Kobe, it's a joke for me.

Defense players couldn't touch offense players....what is that?

  • Yap, I have watched ...

Yap, I have watched that game Battier shut down Kobe. So Battier is a faster defense player? It's a joke...

The video claims the defense player is better(who??), coach is better(???) for one reason: Find excuse for Kobe's failure.

MJ faced team defense, trible team, double team. The truth is, no player could always score when against double, MJ & Kobe both can't.

Kobe got shut down because he tried to shoot almost everytime he got double team. MJ had more ways to lose double team.

  • If you guys watched ...

If you guys watched the video carefully, you will find all the defense players can do is raising their hands, because they will get a foul if they touch the offense player who is carring the basketball.
You call that solid defense? Come on...

Knicks used trible team MJ after a double team. PLUS, handchecking, push MJ by hand, broke his balance, forced he lose ball.

80's Pistons was more physical, they would pull MJ to the floor if they couldn't successful block MJ.

    That's real defense!

  • I agree with you. ...

I agree with you. After NBA ban hand-checking, the avg. score of players and teams went up. That's why NBA ban hand checking.

The real reason NBA teams' score went down in early 2000 and late 90s is, some teams prefered to slow down the game, and the mid range jumpers were losing.

  • MJ scored 51 pts in ...

MJ scored 51 pts in 39(40?) yrs old. And also...against zone defense.

Old MJ could have avg. 20pts, 45% FG against zone defense "PLUS" hand checking.

What excuse could you find for the failure of the Kobe in 2008 finals?

Kobe started score higher after NBA ban hand-checking, it's a truth. Not only Kobe, Wade also benefited from it in 2006 finals

  • He's bigger, ...

He's bigger, stronger and, believe it or not... LESS SCARY to other teams than Kobe Bryant. Partly because of that lack of a jumpshot, but mostly because mentally, he's not quite Kobe.

  • This is what Jordan ...

This is what Jordan did in his FINAL season, 39-40 years old, in 37 Wizards wins...roughly half an NBA season:

    22.3ppg, 48.3%FG, 82.2%FT, 4.5 assists, 6.9 rbs. 1.86 steals, .43 blocks

Not bad for an old man in the Xbox360's version of NBA defense, huh??

  • Michael Jordan from ...

Michael Jordan from 1986-19991, in 253 Bulls wins(51wins/year):
    35.1ppg, 6.6 rbs. 6.2 assists, 54.8%FG, 85.5%FT, 3.0 steals, 1.26 blocks.

No particualar reason for this, just thought how badass these numbers are, totaling a little over 3 full seasons of shear-retarded dominance offensively and defensively.

  • So if the defenses ...

So if the defenses make it impossible to drive the lane, making you shoot, then why does LeBron score more points, with a higher efficiency, without the aid of a reliable jumpshot?

Also, calling the Glove a "renowned" defender at his age is a slight stretch.

Your comments on the 80s were comical.
