As the power of the common people of Japan grew in the latter half of the Edo period (18th and 19th century CE) horimono, or traditional Japanese tattoos, began to flourish as an art form. Based on images from watercolour paintings, woodcuts and popular picture books of the time, the ultimate reward for the long endurance of pain would be a tattoo of immense beauty. To fully understand Japanese horimono it is important to understand their history and background, and it is equally important to continue to preserve the tradition behind them.

ya that is pretty stupid when someone gets a tattoo they cant read, and its done wrong!

but i would say your racist because you keep coming back too this video too tell non-Japanese that they cant get a Japanese tattoo....which seems stupid because some of us actually study the language and understand the kanji we use....

i don't have any tattoos so don't reply with a stupid comment about me not understanding Japanese and having a Japanese tattoo!

  • its not just ...

its not just westerners who appreciate japanese tattoos. use your head and you will see everyone getting different kinds of tattoos such as hindu, sanskrit, tribal, punk, arabic, latin and so on. tattoos in todays multicultural world it is about fashion and personal meaning. no one has the right to judge who can wear what tattoo. its just being ignorant. where do u draw the line? for example: westerners not being able to wear sarees or kimonos as they do not know the meaning. that would be dumb

  • i agree w/ the ppl ...

i agree w/ the ppl below me who say that a lot of ppl get kanji and dont know what it means. but i have a friend who has kanji on his leg and it spells out his name, and also kanji hidden in a tribal band that spells the name of the style of karate he knows (hes a black belt btw). so not everyone gets kanji just because it looks cool. but i imagine most do lol. oh and btw the vid was freakin sweet.
