With the lunar module and a mountain as a backdrop, David Scott recreates Galileo's famous gravity experiment in a low-gravity vacuum by letting a hammer and falcon's feather fall to the ground.

  • The feather is ...

    The feather is bouncing when hits the ground! That means that its much heavier and its not a real feather. A heavier object will be less influenced by the air friction. You can try this by using a hammer and a haircomb. Dropp them from the same height on a sandy soil and you will have exactly the same effect.

    • No, No, NO!

      Sheesh, 1. it bounces because the Moon's gravity is not as great as on Earth. 2. It bounces because its structure is flexible. 3. It bounces because there is no air to slow its acceleration and it strikes the Moon's surface with greater force.

  • Not all objects ...

    Not all objects fall at the same speed. Only in vacuums is that true. The air is too much, ofcourse if you drop 2 cars it doesnt matter but if you drop a ball with the weight of a feather and a heavy one out of lead they will not land at the same time.

    It was a joke. I know that F/m = a, don't worry.

  • Basic physics that ...

    Basic physics that Galileo discovered...all objects, no matter what they weigh, all fall at the same rate of speed relative to the gravity of the world. The only reason we think feathers fall slower on the Earth is because air resistance gets in the way.

    Try this experiment: Roll up a piece of paper into a ball roughly the same size as a baseball and then drop it and the baseball at the same time: They hit the ground together despite the difference in weight.

    the footage is grainy because it was 1971!!!! can ya tell just just when high definition broadcasting was invented? maybe in the late 1990's? not only that the broadcast waves had to travel 238,857 miles which is 30 times the diameter of earth!!

    Lighter=less mass...B=mg but g=B/m u=1/2gt2,...g=acceleration is always stable on a planet...9,81 m/s2 on earth, 1,635 m/s2 on moon.

    Did you notice just as he drops the hammer & feather he stands completely still arms level, even after they land for about two seconds, perhaps any movement would be noticable if the tape was slowed down?

  • and why is a ...

    and why is a feather (which is light to begin with) suddenly become as heavy or at least come under the same sustained downward accelleration (gravity) as a hammer when the feather is even lighter on the moons surface (1/6th earth weight remember?)?..lol

    Maybe, but the moon surface is 250 degrees celcius, what did gallaleo say about a feather being exposed to 250 degree heat and not evaporating??? and didnt the delicate feather freeze up in the 250 degrees below zero shade??

  • The objects were ...

    The objects were obviously tethered to the ground by rubber bands. Kidding. We WENT to the moon--and using limited technology! The rest of the world couldn't get there if a "moon train" left for the lunar surface every hour on the half-hour: They're too busy being socialists. Ok, ok, no foul comments...I'm playing the role of the ugly American. Kidding. We still went!
