Remember when the Russians and the USA could have blown each other to kingdom come? This song is a reflection of that time. Great one in Sting's early solo career.

  • ***How many ...

***How many Ukrainians starved because of Stalin and his troops taking all the crops away?***
    starved or died?
there was a starvation in USSR in 1932-33 years. Yes. Most involved regions - Ukraine, south of Russia, Kazahstan. At least, ethnoses were involved - ukranians, russians, kazahs. In percents most suffered - kazahs.
Reason? Start of "collectivisation" plus bad weather at 32 year.
In 34 there was not a starvation. Suffered regions got help, with seed, tractors, food.

  • I am afraid that ...

I am afraid that Stalin did kill a lot of people. Hereisrussia it is time that Russians admit to some things from the past and then we will know that we can trust you guys again.
How many Ukrainians starved because of Stalin and his troops taking all the crops away?
We try not to blame Russians but the very system that Stalin represented.
P.S the wars in 20 century that you listed were mostly russian made. No offence.

  • I remember the time ...

I remember the time. Weekly siren tests every wednesday at 12 o´clock over the entire country, just to make sure they would work when the nukes would start dropping. The cartoon "When the wind blows" still ranks as one of the most emotional things I have ever seen - a friggin cartoon!

  • facts are more ...

facts are more complex. in ussr the worker democracy was at the start, till the end of 1920th. It looks like a power of crowl. Not effective and destructive.
It was a reason of dictatorship. If soсiety have serious plans and/or is in difficult situation dictatorship is unevitable. So person of stalin is objective.
Could you imagine the selection of boeing pilot by passengers? no. it is dangerous.
so mostly democracy is not working. western democracy really is a show for passengers. the game:)

  • its not so hard: if ...

its not so hard: if you believe in occidental democracy, you'll recognise the usa is a corrupted democracy, but a valid democracy after all: just needs to be cleaned. isnt it?
well: the USSR was a worker state in the full sense of the word. but corrupted by its burocracy: stalin, for example. just needed more worker democracy, but not a restoration of capitalism, which is driving down the east.

herelsrussia is right in many things.

  • at 1960, before ...

at 1960, before Cuban crisis ussr had
    - 300 atomic bombs, but usa - 6000(!).
Usa had 1300 strategic able to carry 3000 atomic bombs to ussr territory.
in 1961 usa have displaced 15 missiles in turkey against ussr. time of flight to ussr-10 min.
Hrushov was angry and as the answer, had decided to move few soviet missiles to cuba. to have strategic parity with usa.
if you are sure that usa is peaceful country, then why usa had 6000 bombs and 1200 strategic bombers? against 300 soviet bombs?

  • What you must ...

What you must remember is that all this is the past. We must remember it, but we must also must move on. Also, Stalin indirectly (subtley) killed them. He never said "kill 20million of our own people" or he'd never have been leader of Russia. Also, i belive russia didnt deserve all that happened to it, but it did deserve quite alot. It was them who almost started ww3 at the cuban missile crisis, and they also started the cold war - stealing the blueprints and then building their own.

  • it is very easy to ...

it is very easy to critic russia, from isolated from the rest of the world, usa. No one bomb in your history ruins someone home. But russia was totally ruined after ww2. And partually after civil war. And having a lot of "friends" around, russia was objectively forced to "special" methods.
in russia lands in 20 century were with a war
    - before ww2 - germans, austrians, polish, hungaries, japans, british, french, chechs.
    ww2-germans, italians, romans, hungaries, etc.
    is it similar to america?

  • really in 20th ...

really in 20th century ussr have people losses from
    - WW1
    - revolution and civil war at 18-22, and attendant starvations
    - starvation at 32-33 year
    - repressions
    - ww2
    no significant victims after ww2.
the popultaion of russia and ussr mostly grows. except of periods of starvation times, civil war, ww2.

  • ***Stalin killed ...

***Stalin killed 20million of his own people.***
    This lie of your propaganda.
When? Russia have not so big population, to sustain this fabricated values of victims.
look. 20 mln of "stalin" and 27 mln of WW2 - 47 mln victims, but pupulation of ussr was about 200 mln. There are real lows of demography. and this laws can show today losses in the past.
Modern demography values approves losses from WW2, but not observe significant losses of "stalin".

  • For those of you ...

For those of you not alive during the second world war - you will not understand the hostility between the allies and the USSR after the war. I was alive during WW2 I saw the Cold War develop. The cuban missile crisis, the Berlin wall and the imminent threat of nuclear War during the 80's makes this song have some meaning for those of us who were alive back then. Stalin killed 20million of his own people. And Hitler is demonised!!!! Now there's irony!
