They had a way of singing then - to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. It about a story, painting a picture with sounds, words and emotion. There are no more male singers in the world sadly.

Burl does do a great job on this, as does John Anderson and Lefty.

My favorites are the classic Country Gentlemen and the Father of Bluegrass, Bill Monroe.

They add a high lonesome sound to a sad lonesome story and slow it down. You can close your eyes and see the story happening, and its high, slow haunting sound gives you chills.

I once heard a saying about new country that I've repeated many times: "It's new. One day it will be old. It will never be country."

I like them both as well. I would urge you to listen to the Burl Ives version. Absolutely heart breaking. It's on the Little Bitty Tear album.

Love the version of this song done my the immortal Chris Ledoux the best. Lefftys is pretty good also.

Lefty's rendition of this song is great but I think John Anderson has done the best job on it of any artist I have ever heard so far.

For some reason, I think things are running slightly fast; the song seems to be a quarter tone too high.

A seminal recording. One of the greatest. That plaintive wail. Frizell's swan song to country music. Any new recording artist of country that cares about country's original must study this recording and try to realize its authentistity. A great "crossover" recording. He is more "country" that Elvis but yet his recording of this song transcends country into pop. He is the stuff of legends.

This song... the Lyrics, the arrangement, the production with the wailing steel guitar... and that Voice, that perfect voice... all seem like they came down from a Higher League... just for this song. (Wish someone would post a video of Knock Again True Love.)

I remember playing this song on the Juke Box, in the late 50's I was always curious about when Lefty said hills at the first part of the song, there was a little whistle in his voice, was it there purposely or did it just happen and they left it in, Incidentally the flip side of this 45 is even better, it's called "Knock Again True Love".

The flip side of this 45 record was "Knock Again True Love" it's a fantastic song, it should have been a big hit itself for Lefty.
