This is the same engine as my other video, but with a few small improvements, such as a lighter displacer and better fitting piston. The alternator is a 16 pole 3 phase air core axial type. I just used some diodes from Radio Shack. I'm going to try some Zener diodes, because I think there will be less losses. The magnets aren't as ideally placed as I would have liked, but it works. I have to thank whoever runs the windstuffnow website, because was able to build the alternator from looking at his pictures.

It's output is only a few milliwatts. 0.85V and 3.5mA are its max output at the max speed...I don't even know what this would be useful for...but it was another fun project. I was going to try and put some metal laminations behind the coils, but the setup of the engine won't allow it, unless I put a longer shaft on the flywheel(which I might do if I get too bored with it the way it is).

  • Those engines that ...

Those engines that run on bodyheat or solar are the 'purest' although i seen one on here that uses a huge magnifing glass and sunlight... I have seen a 5 cilinder stirling engine that i then had a day dream about doing a V8 or flat 8...

  • The best thing you ...

The best thing you can do is to experiment...
Each stirling engine will be diferent so you will get variences in speed and torque...

The one i'm doing, the size is dictated by the materials i have avaliable. However, my aim is to run it on solar, so any electricity i can create will be pure 'profit'...

I've seen on here people using gas burners ect and getting a couple of volts and to me, yes they made a stirling engine but it's not eficiant...

  • The only problem ...

The only problem with doing that is each diode you use has approx. a 0.7V loss, so this isn't negligible in this system...in fact the resistance of the diodes(or impedance, which ever it is) would overcome the output of each coil. Someday I might actually make an engine that is very precise and have the alternator designed for the exact speed of the engine... but that day is a ways off. Again, please try these suggestions and post them! There need to be more Stirling generator videos out there!

Also... try rectifying each coil seperatly you might be getting discharges through other coils

  • Mix up some JB weld ...

Mix up some JB weld, get a brass cylinder, spray in some cooking oil so the JB weld can't stick to the sides, set the cylinder on a piece of paper and drip in the JB weld. Wait for it to dry and pop out the piston using a punch(the JB will be in it pretty tight, so you have to be careful not to bend or mar the cylinder too much while removing the piston.)

But 3 phase is so cool!... And please do build a better engine and post it! I plan on doing the same...

  • ok, to increase the ...

ok, to increase the voltage use more windings...

3 phase is over complecating it...

use a rectifyer (4 diodes) instead of one will double your current...

use smaller coils of wire as in the center hole should be no bigger than half the diameter of the magnets (i think)...

also, you can put a coil set on the other side of the spinning magnets to produce yet more curent...

Basically... I'm building one! so... lets see who gets the highest power... lol

how did you make the the jb weld piston? i want to make one of these but a piston and cylinder is holding me back.

  • Yes, the alternator ...

Yes, the alternator is very inefficient, as I said in comments further down, I added another magnet and essentially doubled the magnetic field and the output, however it is still very inefficient. The number of windings per coil is too low for this low of a speed. There is a lot that goes into alternator design. If this were a better engine, I might actually figure out the best way to make a permantent magnet alternator for the specific speed I'm operating at.

  • I think that your ...

I think that your alternator is inefficient. The engine should be able to create wayyyy more power at the speed it is running at. Try putting the magnets closer to the coils, and using stronger magnets. Other than that, the next step is to just connect it to small motor from radio shack to increase the efficiency.

  • Doesnt it have to ...

Doesnt it have to do with the fact that the magnet forces electrons across the coil?...i mean, if you double the magnetic fields, it would double the electrons passing over the coils.

  • If You find a ...

If You find a discarded 3½ inc discdrive, You will find a 3-phase coil with ironcore and disc with ceramic magnets, ready for use inside it.
Maybe it could be fitted on Your Stirling-engine.
It is used as a motor for the discdrive, but should work fine the other way round as well.
    Regs.

  • That is because you ...

That is because you use diode to convert the AC to DC. The voltage drop on the diode is about 0.7V, so the acutal voltage output of your single side is 0.7+0.8(from your MM reading)=1.5V, and then the actual voltage output of double side is 1.5V*2=3V, but after the diode, it becomes 3-0.7=2.3V, close to your experiment result.
