  • I was confused by ...

I was confused by the half-dim thing. I though that the b-chord in c maj scale was a diminished chord. So that clears that up, but what exactly is a half diminished chord? Is it with just the fifth that's diminished?

  • nahh. just think ...

nahh. just think you can build a scale off of each note of the major scale. for example here is a c major scale or Ionian.
    C D E F G A B C-Ionian
    D E F G A B C D-Dorian
    E F G A B C D E-Phrygian
    F G A B C D E F-Lydian
    G A B G D E F G-Mixylidian
    A B C D E F G A-Aeolian(minor)
    B C D E F G A B(Locrian)
The modes are built by making a 7 notes scale off of each note in the original Ionian or major scale. voila... easy!

  • There is a family ...

There is a family of seven...call them what you want. Let's put them in alphabetical order: (A)dam, (B)eth, (C)indy, (D)an, (E)d, Fred, Gertrude. If (A) is in charge then that could be Aeolian. Or Fred might change the subject to Lydian.. Then (G)ertrude starts humming a drone....Mixolydian!!! If it's E in on the bass then they all sound Phrygian. Just learn where all the NOTES are located in EVERY place on the guitar and the mode will be determined by which Chord, Drone or Bass note is heard.

  • Vinnie is ...

Vinnie is PHENOMENAL, BUT he is WRONG here about the vii chord! I mean B-Half Dim would be correct in C-Major, but it's NOT the chord in the diagram or the chord he plays! He plays the triad version (called B-dim) He is clearly confused about this chord's proper name! If he knew, he either would have played what he played and called it B-Dim, or he would've put an "A" note (on the G-3 string
@2nd fret) to (correctly) play B-Half Dim. That all being said, I'd rather be able to play like Vinnie!

It's almost always confusing when a guitar player discusses modes. It's better to consult a music theory book.

  • No man, thats not ...

No man, thats not exactly how it works. A aeolian has the same notes as C major, but starting from A (AKA the A minor scale). It can help a lot to learn the shapes of them, which I guarantee Vinnie Paul learnt first. You also shouldnt use minor like that either, you will confuse yourself, just like major is major and minor scales are shaped like minor, lydian and such are completely different. Message me if you'd like some help. :)

  • wow, you actually ...

wow, you actually know nothing. At all. I'm sorry but even though this is a VERY simplified explanation they are modes, basic modes without the real chord names (Dorians minor 6th chord) but its right.
