This fascinating, brilliant 20-minute video narrates the history of the "Amen Break," a six-second drum sample from the b-side of a chart-topping single from 1969. This sample was used extensively in early hiphop and sample-based music, and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music -- a six-second clip that spawned several entire subcultures. Nate Harrison's 2004 video is a meditation on the ownership of culture, the nature of art and creativity, and the history of a remarkable music clip.

  • Amen breaks are the ...

Amen breaks are the foundation of a lot of modern groups...some that come to mind are the prodigy, tiesto (on and off), Darude (Namely My Game which features an awesome amen break-based lead), and many others. Its amazing the break has such a prominent position in modern music, and this video did a good job describing its prominence...good work!

What an innovative idea to a documentary on music. I was drawn in throughout the entire documentary. How knew a spinning record could be so riveting. Excellent job.

  • No one's saying ...

No one's saying that Amen has the craziest or hardest drumming in the world; just that the recording, feel, and tone of it are so nice. It's cool to see how such a tiny bit of a song is so influential.

  • He make a Valid ...

He make a Valid point but i mean c'mon don't make it seem like sampling is wrong. Hip hop is based of sampling perod. I mean shit you know how many times James Brown got his Break beats Raped to make other people more rich than he was? Thats why im glad that Royalties are paid to the artist who unknowing made hip hop pop off. Only thing i hate is Paying Royalties on samples only works for the established producers cause record comps jump to pay the royalties to reap the rewards for artists hits.

  • What make it so ...

What make it so Famous he asks?
The fact that you can take each of the Drums, snares and hi hats and chop it cleanly. If it was'nt for this song you would'nt have the those samples.Theres no vocals over the break so you can it clean. Funny though not every song is based after this but instead it created from it with those same Clean ass kicks and snares so what he kicks is true but irrelevant because hip hop is based off of taking Mom and Pops old records and cutting them up on the turntables.
