Amateur Radio Today

The other point is that with a cell phone you can only talk to ONE person at a time, whereas with ham radio you can talk to many people simultaneously. Certainly a great advantage in an emergency don't you think?

To all of you ignorant people saying, "buy a cell," you apparently aren't watching the video...Don't you think that if radio communications were antiquated, police, fire, military, etc...would HAVE STOPPED using it already?? Well, they haven't, and bottom line, history has proven that when regular communications fail, RADIO communication is there...and so are HAMS!!

What are you kidding I can talk to my family vertually anytime I choose using local repeaters and 2mtr set with IRLP. It easily pays for itself

Antiquated? Dude...I'm 30 and therefore I'm definately not old...Just fact of the matter Ham Equipment will work when other forms of communication will fail.

Buy a cell? For a secondary communication method maybe...but Why would I want something so substandard and ineffective in an emergency?

During 9/11 I was in the city and needed to call home to say I was ok. Couldn't make a call on the cell, obviously, since everyone was trying to make a call at the same time. I used the autopatch on a local repeater to make the phone call. At that moment my cell phone was completely useless. If you're in trouble, (even if you can't get at a repeater) you can STILL call for help... it's a way to communicate that's completely decentralized.

With a small battery and a wire, I can call for help. Good luck with that cell phone during your next disaster.

Lots of ham bashing in previous msgs. When I was 15 my radio club was bouncing signals off the moon on ham freq's with me keying the transmitter. Nerds? I'm a company owner, divemaster, skier, triathelete, runner,etc.Ham radio op's had telephones in their cars in the 50's . Many employees of cell developers and manuf. got their start in Amateur radio. When sputnik went up my old man set up a speaker outside our house to play the signal as it passed. if a tornado wipes out an urban area a cell wont work be cause the network will be jammed. that is why we use amateur radio.
BTW all that text messaging and sending pics you do with cell phones... hams did it first and we also do it for free

Understand what? Talking to other people at the other end of the planet, whooopppy! Yes its very interesting, the physics, maths and science behind it all, but its a little antiquated don't you think? Fair, A CB in every car, yes. But why not just use the brilliant GSM technology.

EMP does exist. Its just very rare and usually can only exist as a result of a nuclear explosion.
