  • Yes, it's ...

Yes, it's especially dangerous for hypoglycemics and diabetic.

The drug is most potent for people not habituated to it. Sensitivity varies, though.

I can consume a single cup of green tea without noticing much of an effect. I do that about twice a week. It might be that having once been a heavy user - though that was many years ago - my sensitivity to the drug is low.

  • Hi again Urgelt. I ...

Hi again Urgelt. I can't believe how powerful a drug caffeine is. Once again, I've had to quit tea. I'm now at the stage where even one cup will send me into depression. It's crazy that caffeine is unregulated.
From my research, I've found that caffeine is very bad for blood sugar levels so for someone who is hypoglycemic or diabetic it might be best avoided.

  • I know the feeling. ...

I know the feeling. To an addict, water just doesn't satisfy.

The only way it *will* satisfy is to bludgeon your way through withdrawal and end the addiction.

I drink lots of water nowadays, and it quenches my thirst perfectly well.

I think drinking herbal teas (sweetened with stevia) might help a bit with the dry throat. But if you are going to quit, there is simply no way to avoid the unpleasantness of withdrawal.

    No pain, no gain.

I'll take you at your word, Bam22056. (Not that you have to convince me of anything.)

I'll just point out that a true test of addiction is to stop taking the drug for a few weeks and see what happens.

  • At some point a ...

At some point a drug starts using you, rather than the other way around.

You appear to depend on the drug to achieve focus on school or to get through homework assignments. Dependency is half the definition of addiction. The other half is experiencing withdrawal symptoms when you aren't using the drug.

It sounds to me as though you may be addicted, Nils. You can test that conclusion easily enough - go without, and see if you experience withdrawal.

  • As you've ...

As you've discovered, caffeine isn't a good long-term answer to OCD.

I wish I could predict that life will be all sunshine and roses when you're off the caffeine. Unfortunately, that isn't realistic.

I recommend talking to your doctor about treatment options, if you haven't already.

Improvements in diet are always worth trying, too. Industrially-produced foods and beverages, with their many chemical additives, might be making your symptoms worse.

It's terrific that you were able to connect symptoms to cause, Carl. Good on you.

I'm retired. During my career I was occasionally called upon to teach others in my field, but it was strictly a sideline.

My speaking skills are far from professional caliber. But that's ok. If we let the pros do all our talking for us, it's going to be a much more boring world.

  • Thanks for posting ...

Thanks for posting this. I have been addicted to Coke Zero for around 3 years. At times I have consumed up to 8 litres per day. The stupid thing is that I have Tourette Syndrome and OCD which is agrivated by caffeine. It actually takes away my tics and makes me feel calm & focused for a while but then my tics get much worse when I come down. I drink coke during the day and take sleeping pills at night to counter act it. I am about to give up for good, its messing my life up. Thanks again

  • As a teenager, I ...

As a teenager, I drank as much Mt. Dew a day as I could for a few years. I began experiencing panic attacks so frequently, that I had to force myself to be around ppl, so I quit.
10 years later, i've noticed if I drink even one pop or coffee in the morning, I'll sleep very poorly that night. That's my experience with caffeine.

    P.S.
You are a very good speaker. Are you an Instructor or something???

  • Have you read the ...

Have you read the Wikipedia article on caffeine? It lists a boatload of symptoms. If you have any of them, it could be the caffeine responsible.

2-3 "monsters" every day is easily enough to addict you. That is a negative side effect right there - a physical alteration of certain receptors in your brain. It alters your mood and thought patterns and makes you crave the drug.

Being hooked on a psychoactive drug sure meets my definition of negative.
