You should only strip the fiber once. Buy yourself a pair of "Claws".

When wiping your fibers down the kim wipe should be folded neatly and placed back on top of your alcohol dispenser in order to keep your wipe free of foreign material (such as the pigment your are removing). Use one wipe to clean off first layer after stripping then alcohol wipe before the cleave.

Never keep your chucks open or the hood of your machine. All it takes is one time something dropping into the motors and your machine may need service and service is not cheap.

Never put a dirty fiber in your machine. If you forget the shrink, fine. Slide the shrink on and re cleave.

That is not a buffer tube around the glass. It's called pigment. A protective coating to keep dirt and foreign material off the glass. It's also colored to identify fiber number.
