Vietnam May 10, 1972
Randy 'Duke' Cunningham was the pilot and his RIO was Lt. (jg.) Willie 'Irish' Driscoll flying a F-4J.
After WOII and Korea the designers of airplanes assumed that the day of
the gun, on a fighterplane, was over.
F-4's in Vietnam, on this sortie, had only missiles and NO GUNS also training was poor.
Before Vietnam it was forbidden to train a dogfight situation, it was considered out dated, technology was the answer rockets, missiles, nuke-strike.....why did you need a fighter for?
After the great losses in airbattles over Vietnam, new trainings programs where introduced.
The NAVY came with "TOP GUN"(almost at the end of the Vietnam war) and the USAF came with "Red Flag".
The new generation fighters, even the F-22 "raptor", have all guns now, a hard lesson was learnt, in the first gulf-war the low-tech plane such as the A-10 thunderbolt, was the nr1 tank-killer, this was not appreciated by the the designers.

  • On November 28, ...

On November 28, 2005, Cunningham pled guilty to tax evasion, conspiracy to commit bribery, mail fraud, and wire fraud in federal court in San Diego. Among the many bribes Cunningham admitted receiving were the house sale at an inflated price, the free use of the yacht, a used Rolls-Royce, antique furniture, Persian rugs, jewelry, and a $2,000 contribution for his daughter's college graduation party. What a crook - he probably lied about his military record, or paid pilots to make it up.

But the speaker claims that Toon existed.

Cunningham shot down a captain or another highly ranked and skilled Vietnamese pilot, but surely not Toon.

There wasn't an Ace pilot called Toon in the Vietcong air force...the top scoring Vietnamese pilot was Nguyen Van Coc with 8(9?) kills.

Nguyen Toon was just a legend...I can't believe such a reliable source for info is spreading false information... o.o

  • United States has ...

United States has to take both sides to this war: SUPPORT the war by sending maimed soldiers back into Iraq and then NOT SUPPORT it by sending Vietnam's first Jet Ace to jail.

If anything, sentence him to a life term of Air Combat instruction at the tactical weapons school in Miramar. Hes still got the FISTS

  • How They Justified ...

How They Justified Putting an COMBAT ACE pilot, in jail for 8 years...IS ABSOLUTELY BEYOND ME. I don't care what he did. This man is an ACE pilot. There's a handful in the world, which bare that title. I certainly understand removing him from politics. However, placing a heroic individual like Duke Cunningham in PRISON, is ridiculous. But like the rest of the anti-war crowd, I'm sure they "support the troops." Placing an ACE Combat pilot in prison. It's WRONG....ABSOLUTELY WRONG, by any standard
