yes, that may be so but xbm is right too a song can be taken in many ways. There's no point in fighting about what a song means either because one only the band would really know, two its a song you sould just enjoy it and three everyone's open to their own oppion and anyway mostly all grate songs can be taken in many diffrent ways depending on your life experoemces and what is happening in your life right now.

I know, its so ridiculously obvious, especially when seeing the highly consistent trend of libertarianism, individualism, and freedom in Rush's lyrics, along with the very clear Ayn Rand influence that they would absolutely oppose such concepts as socialism and communism and welfare...Anyone who doesnt get it is either an idiot, or too caught up in their own support of these evil values that they will twist any words to fit that belief of their's.

Would you rather punish greatness simply for the sake that it is great? Is that the contradiction you want society to live by, to punish greatness and to reward inability? We all are who we are, we all exist as humans, in the universe. We have a short live, and to do the best one can do, to make the most of that existence it the most moral thing we can do...and to hate greatness and with to punish it is the most evil thing you can do.

The Oaks had a born greater ability to grow high and take in sunlight than the Maples. The would grow to be strong, tall, great, whole the Maples wouldn't. Read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. After reading that, it's an obvious analogy to the philosophical battle held in the story. Its about our society today, where some are greater than others, but that jealousy, that hatred of greatness, that punishment of ability that drive the maples to use force on the oaks to fulfill their undeserved desires, in the same way that society today sanctions the minority power to limit the greatness of the minority "for the sake of the people."

The song means whatever you want it to mean.

Just because the music is intended with a certain meaning, doesn't mean you can't come up with a meaning that you, yourself, identify with.

It's about what people will do to themselves on account of envy. The Maples make themselves less just to make the Oaks less, even though all could have been taller without the Union.
Few rock bands make you ponder their work; it's why I like this band so much.

the comic book was thinking of deeper things, maybe not Peart at the time...but the depth has transferred, Peart was maybe just a mule/messanger, not the visionary...

this song is about the rich and the poor and the poor want more equel rights

but, Neil himself even said that he was inspired by a comic that featured trees arguing amongst themselves. I love how people are thinking of deeper meanings for the song, but ir could simply just be about trees.

I don' t understand why my Eve and Adam analogy got so much negative response. Think about it; Adam and Even had paradise, and yet, they did not manage to live in harmony. Both were punished, not just one..obviously by God the creator.
(This makes more sense than this story about some hockey teams)

Mauiprincess55; ...or maybe its about trees.. the trees are a metaphore. Question remains: "who used the hatched axe and saw?" Obviously not the maples or the oaks. So who would benefit from them dissapearing? Maybe a peasant who wants to work the land?
