On Thursday 12/4/2008, the R&GVRRM's two new General Electric "tonner" locomotives are delivered by the Livonia, Avon & Lakeville Road to the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum in Rush (Industry), New York. We pick up the delivery north of Avon, New York and catch it several times before arrival at Industry. Finally freed of the locomotives and their speed restriction, the LA&L road train powered by two ALCO Centuries roars by the R&GVRRM's new locomotives parked safe on their new siding.
Thanks to the generosity of Rochester Gas & Electric Corporation, these two locomotives were donated after serving RG&E for many years at their Russell Station electric generating plant in Charlotte, New York which was shutdown in the spring of 2008. The engines are a GE 110-tonner, #8, and a GE 45-tonner, #1950. The #8 (built 1967) is fully serviceable and the #1950 (built 1950) runs, but needs a fair amount of mechanical and cosmetic work prior to entering service. Donations are welcome to help us preserve and restore these two locomotives.

  • The 45-tonner is ...

The 45-tonner is rated for 20MPH. There is a plaque on the control stand. The 110-tonner is rated for 30MPH via a similar plaque. They were only moving at less than 15 MPH the entire trip so the railroad was well within the locomotive's capabilities. You can see by the speed of the train passing the engines that they were happy to be free of their speed restriction, i.e. our engines. The railroad knew exactly what they had and did a great job to insure we got our new engines in one piece.

You can tell that the little 45tonner with the siderods was not meant to go that fast, it couldn't under its own power, look how fas the rods are spinning.
