    What you are seeing is the outside skin that split open and slid up, falling away.

    I remember we used to do these things in class, where we got a butterfly dome thingy and a little cup with alot of tiny catterpillars in it, and when they got to the top they changed, and it was soo cool, one morning we got to school and the butterfly came out of its cocoon! I'll never forget that.
