On 15 May, 2006, double amputee Mark Inglis reached the summit of Mt Everest. It was a remarkable achievement and Inglis was feted by the press and public alike. But only a few days later he was plunged into a storm of controversy when it was learned he and his team mates had passed an incapacitated climber, Englishman David Sharp, leaving him to a lonely death high in the Death Zone. In Dying for Everest we hear their stories and witness the strange effect Everest has on the rules of survival. And at the end, we are able to judge for ourselves the morality of climbing in the Death Zone. • Guys, I'm sorry, ...

Guys, I'm sorry, but he died only because of himself. Nobody should be blamed. You can't carry a frozen body down Everest, because more people would die! You can't help the inevitable. People die on Everest, and that's a fact. Sharp couldn't help it, and nobody could. No one should be blamed.

  • Just a hypothetical ...

Just a hypothetical question to anyone here: You have spent a lot of time, money and training, and u are pushing your body to the limit. You are 500m from the summit, and you can either try to save someone, for which you may or may not have the energy, and he may or may not survive, all at the cost of your "dream"; or u can push onwards. Which would you choose?

  • The reality is that ...

The reality is that many of those attempting to climb Everest have no business near that mountain. They not only endanger their own lives but those of other climbers around them. The advent of these commercial guided expeditions has only worsened the situation. Many more people will die on this mountain, that's for sure.

  • What is not ...

What is not mentioned here is that all mountaineers are totally self absorbed, they do what they do whatever the cost to anyone and i'm sure the dead man would have done him the same service should their roles have been reversed.

Wasn't that gay british singer kinghted, um, Elton John? I believe that's right! Stupid Brit! I read on a blog that he and Sir Hilary knight each other nightly; like all you wankers do.

And to the poster making fun of Sir Hillary... Sir Hillary isn't some crumpet stuffing wanker, he's about 20X as hardcore as you'll ever be, fat-ass! Lets se how much you do in your miserable life, and how many people remember your name, or knight you.

  • You wanna save ...

You wanna save lives, save the lives of some poor kids, they actually need it. These adults risk it all of the summit: buyer beware! Some are rescuers... good for them! Its not anyone's job however, to die along with someone else! You fail to understand the complexity of this issue, morality is fragile, and you'd die alone on everest with that BS congenial attitude.

  • More fulfilling ...

More fulfilling than summiting, but infinitely more dangerous. You never enter into "risk of death golden time." EVER.
Here's my point... how bad can it be to die on top of the highest peak in the world? We're all gonna die anyway, why not die among the gods?

You know who is at fault here -- david sharp! No one else! His life was his responsibility; he risked it all and it cost him dearly. As far ar Sir Edmund Hillary, go have some scones and tea you old bag!

  • What doesn't make ...

What doesn't make sense about it? Others are defending their nonaction by saying that it would be too dangerous to attempt a rescue. All the climbers are already at huge risk of death. What is the difference?

"These climbers are already at huge risk, why not TRY to save another person even if it means abandoning your attempt." that didnt make sense....

  • I guess my point is ...

I guess my point is that death zone rescues have taken place, against all odds. These climbers are already at huge risk, why not TRY to save another person even if it means abandoning your attempt. I would rather say that I tried even if I failed than have my successful summit tainted by this kind of thing. How could you live with the guilt?

And if you succeeded in saving someone? How much more fulfilling that would be.

  • "It's a hard thing ...

"It's a hard thing to explain"

Fuck, I would say so... I couldn't imagine not trying to help. The argument of risking their lives is irrelevant, they already are in mortal peril.

A team abandoned their summit to save Lincoln Hall who was in the death zone overnight and so out of it he thought he was on a fuckin boat and considering jumping overboard- he also had on no hat, gloves or sunglasses yet they were able to save him. His fingers looked like wax candles. He is alive today.

  • That's what you ...

That's what you would think, but really learn more about Everest, you will find out that, that's how it is on Everest. David Sharp died (and 199 other climbers) because if someone tried to save a dieing climber, all there would be is more deaths, more tragedies... Do you want that? You probably don't understand and will retaliate with more irrelavent rants.
