McCain knew he was going to lose because of Obama's incredible charisma, so he did something drastic. Now that Clinton was out he wanted to cash in on the feminist vote. She's young - which makes up for his own considerable age and contrasts well against Obama - and represents the religious right. McCain is heavily relying on the racist vote so Palin was the perfect unifier against the opposition.
Her vice-presidency has nothing to do with how qualified she is.

From listening to the general broadcast media of our day, I get the impression that many Americans -certainly the ones that are supporting the McCain ticket- don't really understand the definition of 'Socialism' or 'Socialist'. This could be due to the Reagan-era Republicans continually (and successfully) tying 'Socialism' & social values to Communism.
All governments have social programs in them. All of them. Police, Healthcare, Progressive Tax, etc.

I would vote for Ken Blackwell, Clarence Thomas or Condoleezza Rice in a heartbeat. I believe any conservative would, or at least the ones I know. I would also vote for a black muslim woman if she held the same values as myself. Of course there are racists out there but not all conservatives are.
