F-18 Hornet carrier landing. We are standing on the carrier deck of the USS Ronald Reagan off the coast of California during the Friends and Family Day flight ops demo. This was seriously LOUD!

    I was just on the Carrier I'm a Marine, they actually put the Jet into Full Power After Burn when they catch the arresting Wire incase it snaps or w/e so they can still take off and try again.

    big cables lay across the flight deck, the hook on the back of the plane grabs one of the cables, hopefully. If not they fly right back off the end of the carrier and try again.

    as they land they apply full thrust so if it does not grap the cable they can still yake off instead of ditching in the ocean

    it catches the cable they have on the platform of the carrier and it helps grab the jet and stop it, or else it'd just fly off the edge of the aircraft carrier.
