Yes, you are correct. They weren't NHRA-legal Funny Cars, since that is a specific set of characteristics that must apply to any vehicle in the class. My buddies and I were using the term lightly to imply that the cars had been reworked heavily to do all those wild tricks.

funny cars?! those wern't funny cars they were lightend hopped up beattles,disny acctualy went to a shop in californa and had them build a bunch of motors for the movies,read a damn book you jerk. >:(

Some gearhead buddies went with me to see "Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo" when it came out. We had a great time watching all those Funny Cars wrapped up in Beetle skins.

Unfortunately, I also paid to see "Herbie Goes Bananas." Once.
