Hawkwind - Down Through the Night

A slideshow I made to try and reflect the Space Ritual, one of the greatest ever rock stageshows.

In 1972, Hawkwind, the then lords of the UK underground, teamed up with luminaries such as poet Bob Calvert, writer Michael Moorcock, artist Burney Bubbles, and stage lighting team Liquid Len And The Lensmen. The resulting show became so charged with psychedelic mysticism that it hardly seemed to take place in the real world at all.

Of special interest here is the near-legendary dancer Stacia. A big fan of Isadora Duncan, her interpretive dances were a major part of the Hawkwind Space Ritual.

Very little footage has ever been made public of this mysterious show, so I have tried to capture a little of what it might have been like ..

btw I have deliberately heavily blured some of the photos by Danish photograper Jørgen Angel that are not public domain images. They are available to buy from his site:

  • Yes, there are many ...

Yes, there are many British bands that influenced the making of Spinal Tap, and I'd say Hawkwind were definitely one of them. I would say that this was an great honour, although some may disagree.

For example, in 1976 Hawkwind built a stage set called Atomhenge. It worked well in the open air when they played at Stonehege, but unfortunately when they took in on tour it was to large to fit on most stages. Sound familiar?

  • You are lucky, I ...

You are lucky, I wasn't even born then but the magic of early seventies Hawkwind really fires my imagination like nothing else.

What I would love to see is a special DVD package from EMI celebrating those times. If it were done right, it could be one of the best classic rock DVDs ever and seal the Hawkwind legacy for all time.

The videos that myself and others have made prove that it can be easily done, although my own efforts are very amature.
