Araby & Raphael - Snake Dance

  • Oriental Dance (the ...

Oriental Dance (the correct name for Belly Dance) does not only mean middle east. Egypt for example does not really count as middle east but africa and still is a country where a lot of moves come from. The veil wasn't originally from the middle east either, nor the tribal.
The Snake-Dance itself... I would've preferred something more slow and sensual. It would fit the snake immage more.

  • And there are links ...

And there are links to the Middle East and dance. The priestesses on a particular special day would come out with venomous snakes and dance into a frenzy where the snakes would bite and inject their venom, sending the women into a hysterical state and apparently able to communicate with the gods & goddesses. Sadly none really lived through the experience...

  • hmmmm I get a ...

hmmmm I get a little sad when I see people dance with snakes as 'props'. No respect to the snake at all. I belly dance in one way, but snake dance in another. Two entirely separate ways of dancing. The latter is little movement as possible and i let the snake lead and move wherever he wants to go. If anything its just a more creative way of displaying the snake in all its beauty.

  • There is no ...

There is no historical connection between snakes and bellydancing, but as bellydancers often move in a smooth undulation way, snakes are in interesting juxtaposition. I also think that people often draw a correlation with pagan snake goddesses. But it is very important to keep in mind what Maizy05 said...they are animals, not props.

  • A snake is not a ...

A snake is not a prop. You will be responsible for the daily care and well-being of your snake for the 99% of the time you aren't dancing with it. Snakes are expensive to buy, feed and care for. Do you have a vet who treats snakes? Many snakes will only eat live food. Can you feed live rats to a snake without either of you getting hurt? Boas are not poisonous, but they do have teeth and will bite if not handled properly. Do a lot of research and serious thinking before making your decision.
