Saying it was a space race is like saying thanks for WW2 for creating the V2. Nonetheless, BOTH American and Russian space programs used data from the V2 & scientists and others Before them. It was a natural time to explore WW2 was over.Even after the "phony race" (ie. making it to the moon) we decided to extend the (phony) race and go a few more times...sort of like "winners laps". So it appears without the race, we never would have gone to the moon, and that would have been the biggest loss.
