Somehow the game lets the shotgun do more damage if you don't fire as rapidly. If you fire once and hit, the animal should fall down, then if you wait to fire again until it gets up you can usually kill most things in two shots. Retarded, but that's what works for me. I think you need to work a bit on your evasive maueuvering - every time you get run down by animals, I shout "run away, run away!" at the screen, a la Monty Python & the Holy Grail. Can you imagine Lara vs. the killer rabbit?
